On to first… | columbia md child photographer

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

This is a sort of sentimental picture of the week.  This is from almost 10 months ago, on Noah’s first day of school:

Today’s his last day of school.  He’s done with kindergarten and on to 1st grade.  Same backpack, though now he’s a good 2 inches taller.  And he’ll probably add another inch before he starts school again in the fall.  I hope he enjoys 1st grade as much as he enjoyed kindergarten.

Legos! | columbia md family photographer

Monday, June 21st, 2010

For the snapshot this week, here’s proud Noah, with the lego creation he spent all sunday afternoon working on (while Mama was off at a session) – it’s a repair shop.  He’s since added on to it – there’s now a parking lot, a crane, and he’s trying to figure out how to add a car wash.  He’s convinced he’s going to get his picture in the Lego Club magazine.  Noah’s nothing if not sure of himself.

He even made a sign, to declare the grand opening of the repair shop, complete with balloons and kindergarten spelling, which I find endlessly cute.

So, should any of your lego vehicles break, you know where to send them.  Noah’s repair shop is open for business!

First Father’s Day | Davidsonville md newborn photographer

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Today I got to meet Baby L, who, in addition to being completely adorable, was helping his dad celebrate his very first father’s day!  It was truly an honor to be part of such a special day.  Little L did his best to convince everyone that he was NOT sleepy – I’ve never seen a baby fight sleep as hard as he did!  But, eventually he conked out, and then he was good as gold.

I love the squishy newborn face.

He was over 8 lbs at birth – much bigger than my kids (who were 7 lbs 7 oz and 6 lbs 13 oz) – and so adorably plump!

The little newsboy…

L, it was fabulous meeting you today.  I hope you let your parents sleep tonight!

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, both the brand new ones and the more experienced ones!

Winner! | columbia md photographer

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

On Monday, I threw a little contest into the snapshot post, and now it’s time to announce the winner!  And the winner is Gwen!  Not only did she get almost all of them right, she was FAST!  She missed the dinosaur at the bottom, but she named the plastic toys in his bed too (yes, my kid sleeps with everything), and she got the most right, so she’s the winner!  Gwen, I’ve got a $10 starbucks card for you.  Check your email.

Just in case you’re curious, here’s the line-up:

He’s got close to 40 stuffed animals all together, but we try to limit how many he can sleep with at once, since the toddler bed is only so big!

And now, another contest!  Same prize, different way to enter.  On the toolbar above, you’ll see a category marked “Pages”.  Under that, you’ll see one that says “Subscribe“.  Go to that page, subscribe for email updates when a new post is made, and then come back to this post and leave a comment here stating that you’ve subscribed (or, if you’re already subscribed to the blog, just comment here and tell me so).  Next tuesday, I’ll pick a comment at random, and that person will also receive a $10 starbucks gift card!

Contest extended for another week – you still have time to enter!

Fall | greensboro nc photographer

This week’s picture of the week is from a session I did just before Thanksgiving last year, while visiting my mom and sister in NC.  It was a bright, sunny day (though warm for November, thankfully!) and it took this little guy a long time to warm up to me.  But he finally did!  This is one of my favorites from the session, just because of the wonderful fall colors.  I love his little shadow too.

Nap Time | columbia md child photographer

Monday, June 14th, 2010

I love taking pictures of my kids sleeping.  My oldest falls asleep with a small light on, and sleeps like a log, so I can get pictures of him sleeping all the time.  The younger one, not so much.  He’s not a super light sleeper, but his room is DARK – far too dark for me to go in there and take pictures.  The other day, I went in to wake him from his nap, and he was completely zonked out, so I took a moment to raise the shades (he slept through it!) and snap a quick shot of him.  In case you were wondering, yes, he likes his stuffed animals.

And, just for something fun to liven up your Monday, I’ve got a special prize to the first person who can name all the stuffed animals he’s got on his bed in this picture, or the person who comes closest.  I’ll give you a hint – 5 of the 7 have something in common.  Happy guessing!

Leading Lines | columbia md child photographer

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

I love this bridge.  It’s just great for pictures – it’s got a great feel, and it’s wonderful for leading lines.  It’s in direct sun though, so unless it’s cloudy, it’s a difficult setting.  Fortunately, on this day, it was beautifully overcast (I think that’s a phrase you’ll only hear from photographers.  Or perhaps meteorologists) so the bridge was perfect.  I’d just gotten some new pettis, and needed a model to try them out (funny, my boys aren’t so much into the pettiskirts).  My friend’s 2 year old was happy to help, in exchange for candy, of course.  This is one of my favorites from the day.

Tiny Little Guy | washington dc newborn photographer

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Sunday, I got to meet lil F, the sweetest little guy!  I met his mom a few weeks ago at her maternity session.  Now she has an adorable little baby boy.  He’s so cute, even if he’s not the slightest bit sleepy (or at least that’s what he tried to convince us)!  All my baby-sleeping charms did nothing on him!  It’s not often I can’t get a baby to sleep (oops, I probably just jinxed myself!) but this little fellow wasn’t having any of it.

Yawning kind of ruins the “I’m not tired” ruse.  I love baby yawns.

How sweet is this?  I love when those tiny fingers grip mom’s.

Welcome to the world, F!  I hope you finally conked out and let your mom and dad have some rest!

Growing Up | columbia md family photographer

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

I love repeat clients.  Sure, it’s nice to know my work is appreciated, but the best part is watching the kids grow.  Sunday, I got to see a family I’ve seen twice before, during a portrait party in April 2009, when they were just a family of 3, and last November, when their younger daughter was a teeny tiny newborn.  Now, A is 7 1/2, and little S is 7 months old!  The family is heading to Germany later this month, so I’m so glad I got to meet with them one more time before they go.

I love babies this age, when they can sit, and not move.  They’re so expressive, and when they’re happy, they show it with every fiber of their being.

(Of course, when they’re mad, the same is also true, and not necessarily any less cute.)

Miss A certainly is getting to be a big girl!  And she loves the silly bandz!

This, I absolutely adore:

The whole beautiful family!

Kate and Brian | Columbia md photographer

Monday, June 7th, 2010

This weekend may have been one of my favorite sessions ever, mainly because I got to photograph my best friend!  I’ve known Kate since she was 2 years old and I was 3.  We spent weekends and long summers playing, riding bikes and doing all the stupid things kids do (and we’ve got the scars to prove it!) so when she announced last December that she was getting married, I was over the moon for her!  So this weekend I drove down to Richmond, VA to do an engagement session with her and her fiance, Brian.

I’m pretty sure Saturday was one of the hottest days I’ve ever shot on, and definitely the hottest one I’ve spent trudging outside for several hours for a session.  Yet through it all, they still looked great!

The ever-important ring shot:

Aren’t they cute?

Congrats, Kate and Brian!  Thanks for the fun (if sweaty) weekend!  Can’t wait for the big day!
